Where Am I Now?

I live in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

What Work Do I Do Now?

I am a freelance translator, copywriter, and proofreader, primarily working remotely. I also write essays for leading Dutch newspapers such as de Volkskrant and NRC. Next to this I am currently also the

I am available for freelance projects on Upwork, where I bring the same dedication and expertise to every client. What is Upwork?

In addition to these activities, I also enjoy helping SME entrepreneurs as a consultant. I help them consider the best approach for their supply and demand. I now do this on a regular basis for businesses in Cambodia, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Portugal.

With practical tips and smart strategies, I help entrepreneurs get more out of their business without it costing a fortune. Whether it’s a better managed hotel, a more efficient kitchen or a more appealing menu in a restaurant or an event that really stands out, I love helping people move forward!

I Have A Pet

This is my cat Fifty Shady (2014, Cambodia).

Projects

  1. I am developing a non-fiction book, Eat Out, Lose Fat – The Complete Guide to Restaurant Dining Without Derailing Your Goals, in partnership with a physical therapist. This resource is designed to address the shortcomings of traditional diet publications that compel readers to sacrifice their social engagements in pursuit of their health and wellness targets.
  2. I’m developing an original crime thriller called ‘Flagged‘ – a six-part series set in Thailand and Australia. The project has a complete pitch package with character profiles and episode outlines. I’m in discussions with production partners and am targeting streaming platforms like Netflix. If you’re a TV producer who might be interested, I’d love to hear from you.
  3. I am writing the Dutch novel Het Laatste Hostel‘ (The Last Hostel). It deals with themes as digital identity, “performative” freedom, the illusion of online success, and the search for authenticity in a world that is always ‘on’. The central conflict revolves around the question: can you reinvent yourself if you disappear offline, and what is left of you if you don’t have an audience.
  4. The Quiet Reader, an online literary magazine that I founded in 2020. Revamped and relaunched last Spring with a new edition released last December.
  5. I am Director of Operations of Expedition Kilimanjaro, the tour company I have been running since 2008. Yes, that’s for over 16 years and I can’t stop telling people to get up that mountain themselves.
  6. With my return to Cambodia, expectations arose that I will restart my former movie theater, The Flicks. The original location is no longer available, so I am quietly looking for a possible new location. Perhaps an existing building, or perhaps I’ll have something built on a vacant lot right in the middle of the city. Exciting times! But it won’t be a new Flicks, it will be a new name.
  7. On the former website of The Flicks Community Movie House, which I ran from 3 locations in the capital of Cambodia for 12 years, I still post recommended movies for fans of the better movies.

Watching

Film: Last film seen: Ocean with David Attenborough.
Series:I am having my “tv laptop” repaired. But I am getting ready for the last season of Squid Game.

Reading

My Goodreads keeps track of what my Kindle has been going through lately.

Bucket list

Only recently I have been getting desires to visit Palawan island in the Philippines in the near future. I might be in need of the various blue waters and lagoons and beaches of El Nido and the Calamian Islands. Just to have some new travel images on my walls.
